Summary: UsenetServer's pricing is
attractive, but their accounts fall short in a few
important areas. In our opinion we reviewed other
unlimited providers that simply offered a better
value.
UsenetServer's download & upload speeds were good
but slower than many of the providers that we
tested, and they also had the most restrictive
connection limit (10). On average other unlimited
providers allowed 20 concurrent connections, with
NNTPjunkie (our pick for best unlimited provider)
offering a whopping 32 connections. As an example,
we retrieved the UsenetServer newsgroup list at a
rate of 1,261 newsgroups per second, which was
slower than other providers we tested such as
NewsGuy (1,845 per sec) and Giganews (1,493 per
sec).
UsenetServer's completion rate was solid at 99+%.
Their multi-part binary retention (105 days) was not
competitive with the other providers, but if you're
in the newsgroups frequently, and have an unlimited
account this may be more than enough retention for
you.
While too many account plans can become confusing,
we were disappointed to find that UsenetServer
didn't offer any metered accounts, and only one term
discount option for their unlimited service. On the
bright side, at $13.32 month they had one of the
cheapest unlimited prices we found (only NNTPjunkie
- $12.50 month & Newshosting - $12.95 month were
cheaper).
To their credit UsenetServer offers SSL encryption
and a search engine within their accounts, but they
were missing other freebie extras that you'll get
with other providers (Web access, email, newsreader
software, etc.). Their support staff can be reached
by email & phone, and their replies were courteous
and competent, with an average response time of 1hr
13min. |
