Summary: Overall we thought that Newshosting
was okay. There was nothing that was really great,
or really bad about their service, they were just...
okay. In our opinion, other providers offer cheaper
accounts & more complete services.
We ran a few speed tests to Newshosting's servers,
and the results were average compared to other
providers. We downloaded Newshosting's newsgroup
list at a rate of 1,782 groups per second, which was
faster than some, but slower than other providers
(NNTPjunkie 1,971 groups per sec, Newsdemon 1,863
per sec, NewsGuy - 1,845 per sec ). Uploading a 3 MB
file through Newshosting took 76 seconds, which was
in the slower range of providers we tested & it took
19 seconds to complete a 3 MB file download.
Newshosting had the lowest multi-part binary
retention (80 days), and they did not mention a
completion rate at their website. Other providers
reference a completion rate (typically 99+%), so we
can only guess as to why Newshosting does not
provide that info. The posting feature within all
Newshosting accounts is turned off, so you'll have
to request posting access, which can take as long as
3 days
Newshosting's least expensive unlimited account
($12.95 month) is limited to 80 days retention, 12
connections, and no SSL, which may not meet your
needs. NNTPjunkie for example has 120 days
retention, 32 connections, and free SSL for as
little as $12.50 month. Newshosting does offer 110
days retention, 20 connections & SSL, but the price
increases to $15.83 month.
There are no free account extras at Newshosting. If
you're looking for account freebies... SSL, unused
capacity rollover, NNTP & Web access, newsgroup
search, email, etc... we'd suggest providers such as
NewsGuy, Easynews, NNTPjunkie & Usenetserver. Their
support staff can only be reached by email & our
support inquiry was answered in 1hr 9min. |
