Summary: We were not impressed with the
Newsgroups.Com service. Other providers offer more
at a fraction of the price and their customer
support (or lack of it) was very disappointing. In
our opinion there are better providers out there to
choose from.
We retrieved Newsgroups.Com's group list quickly,
but their file upload and download speeds were slow.
Uploading a 3 MB file averaged 80 secs at
Newsgroups.Com, which was slower than NewsGuy (72
sec) & NNTPjunkie (71 sec). A 3 MB file took 30
seconds to download at Newsgroups.Com, almost two
times slower than NewsGuy, Usenetserver & Giganews.
Their completion rate was similar to other providers
(99+%), and we were able to verify their multi-part
binary retention at 150 days. In this respect they
are similar to Giganews... big on retention, but
overpriced and short on account features. Their 25
GB account ($12.95) is more expensive & offers a
fraction of the capacity of other providers (NewsGuy
- 50 GB / $8.33 and 100Proofnews - 40 GB / $8.95).
It gets worse... Newsgroups.Com does not rollover
unused capacity within their metered accounts, so
what you don't use you lose. Newsgroups.Com does
offer an unlimited plan, but at $18.95 month, they
are not competitive.
To their credit, Newsgroups.Com offers a free
newsreader and SSL within their accounts, but
they'll need to include additional extras if they
want to stay competitive with other providers. Their
support staff can only be reached by email & we sent
two emails that have yet to be answered. Other
providers we've reviewed have responded to support
emails in under 1hr. |
