Summary: Newsdemon is similar to Supernews in
that they provide a good newsgroup service, but
their account pricing & features are not competitive
with other providers. In our opinion other providers
offer a cheaper, more complete package.
The newsgroup list downloaded fast enough from
Newsdemon (1,863 groups per second), but we recorded
average speeds (22 sec) when downloading a 3 MB file
from their servers (NewsGuy - 17 sec, Giganews - 17
sec). We also like to test upload speeds, but
Newsdemon requires new users to request posting
access after the activation of their account.
Unfortunately it's been more than 24 hours since we
sent our request, and we have not yet received a
reply, nor had our posting access turned on. They do
not make an obvious mention of this restriction at
their site, and we can see this being a hassle for
people that like to post to the newsgroups.
Newsdemon maintains a 99+% completion rate, but they
also have one of the lowest multi-part binary
retention rates at 110 days. Their 20 connection
limit was higher than some (Giganews - 10,
100proofnews - 15), but lower than others (NewsGuy -
32, NNTPjunkie - 32) and if your access stalls it
may take +30 minutes for their servers to clear a
hung connection. Providers like NewsGuy allow you to
clear hung connections instantly.
The 50 GB account at Newsdemon is reasonably priced
at $15.99 but is missing too many features (SSL,
unused capacity rollover, etc.) to be competitive
with other providers. Their $19.54 unlimited plan
does include SSL encryption but is too pricey when
compared to other unlimited providers like
NNTPjunkie ($12.50) or UsenetServer ($13.32)
Newsdemon offers a free newsreader, but other
providers manage to offer more freebies at a lower
price... unused capacity rollover, NNTP & Web
access, newsgroup search, email, phone support,
etc... so you'll find better metered & unlimited
values. Their support staff can only be reached by
email & it took them over 19 hours to answer 1 of
our 2 inquiries. Our other inquiry requesting
posting access has not yet been answered. |
