Summary: Easynews has been providing quality
newsgroup services for a number of years, but their
monthly metered accounts are expensive, and they
don't offer longer discounted terms. While there's a
lot to like about Easynews, their pricing prevented
us from ranking them with the other top metered
providers.
When we tested Easynews servers we had a quick,
stable connection but their speed benchmarks were a
little slower than other providers we reviewed. On a
positive note Easynews does not appear to limit the
number of simultaneous connections on their servers.
Most providers will have a connection cap ranging
from 3 (Newsgroups.Com) to 32 (NewsGuy.Com)
Their 99+% completion rate was comparable to other
providers, and their 200 days of multi-part binary
retention ranks them near the top, but the extra
retention may contribute to their higher pricing. As
an example the 30 GB account at Easynews costs
$14.97 month, while other providers like NewsGuy (50
GB / $8.33 month) and 100Proofnews (40 GB / $8.95
month) are considerably less expensive. Easynews did
not offer any type of unlimited download plan at the
time of this review, which might make them
unattractive to some power users.
As far as free account extras, Easynews and NewsGuy
are similar in some respects... unused download
capacity rollover, capacity rewards, NNTP & Web
access, newsgroup search, and SSL encryption. Where
they differ is that NewsGuy includes free email
boxes & website hosting along with their newsgroups,
and their accounts are fully functional from the get
go (downloading, posting, etc.). In the case of
Easynews you have to request posting access after
your account activation. Their support staff can be
reached by email & phone, and in our experience
their replies were quick, with an average response
time of 23 min. |
