Summary: 100Proofnews did not compare well to
other metered providers that we've reviewed, and
overall we were not very impressed with their
service. Based on our tests the 100Proofnews servers
were much slower than other newsgroup providers.
Uploading a file took 80 seconds, compared to 72
seconds through other services. The speed difference
became more obvious when we tested a file download
that took 43 seconds through 100Proofnews, but only
17 seconds at NewsGuy. Maybe their servers were
having a bad day, but in any event, their speed
benchmarks were not exciting.
Rather than mention a specific completion rate at
their site, 100Proofnews makes a vague reference to
"High Completion Rates". Other providers such as
NewsGuy, Giganews & Easynews promote a 99+%
completion rate, so we can only guess as to why
100Proofnews does not mention a specific %. As far
as multi-part binary retention, we were able to
verify 110 days.
The one bright spot for 100Proofnews is their
pricing (40 GB / $8.95 month), which is second only
to NewsGuy (50 GB / $8.33 month). From what we could
tell, 100Proofnews does not rollover unused download
capacity, and they count headers against your
monthly capacity quota, making their account's less
attractive than other providers we've reviewed.
Aside from SSL encryption, 100Proofnews does not
include any other features or extras within their
accounts. Rollover capacity, free headers, SSL,
newsgroup search, NNTP & Web access, email boxes and
phone support are all included in the less expensive
NewsGuy account, but are missing from the
100Proofnews account. Most disappointing of all was
the customer support at 100Proofnews. All of the
providers we've reviewed have promptly answered our
tech questions within 1hr, but when we sent two
emails to 100Proofnews, they took over 12hr to
answer one & the other has not yet been answered. |
